To make the most of your EV purchase be sure to do your research. Review your estimated mileage so that you can determine how to charge your vehicle properly. Do you need an Electric Vehicle, or would a Hybrid fit your needs better? Listed below is information to use for research and to help you prepare for an EV.

Sometimes a member purchases an EV only to get it home and discover their home electrical panel does not have the space to add a level 2 charger without upgrading their electrical service. View the information below to help determine the EV charger, and its requirements, that fits your needs:

  • Level 1:  A standard 120 volt home receptacle on a dedicated circuit will provide three to five miles of driving range for every hour of charging.
    • If you are only driving 20-30 miles per day this level of charging may be sufficient.
    • Requires 120 Volt and standard electrical plug within reach of your vehicle
  • Level 2:  Level 2 charging, which can be installed at home or found in public settings, will provide 12 to 60 miles of range for every hour of charging.
    • If you are driving more than 40 miles a day, or can’t charge all night long, this level may be a must for you.
    • Requires 240 Volt, special plug, higher amperage breakers, and possibly additional equipment and capacity in your electrical panel.
  • DC Fast Charge:  While not an option for home use, DC Fast Chargers are often found along highway corridors and in some shopping areas and can charge a vehicle to 80% in about 30 minutes.

Once you have your EV, you may ask the question “where do I charge it?”  Most members charge at home with either a level 1 or level 2 charger, however, if you are traveling, or are out in the community, you may want to locate a charger to use, or plan your route ahead of time.  Make sure you visit the proper charger you need for your current battery level.  Keep in mind Level 2 chargers only charge at 12 to 60 miles of range for every hour of charging, whereas a DC fast charger can bring most average EV’s from low battery levels up to 80% in about 30 minutes.
