(CUMMING, GA) Recently the Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation announced the approval of $19,940 in funding for lunch program deficits for local schools. The money will be used to assist thirty-four (34) Forsyth County schools ($13,360) and three (3) Dawson County schools ($6,580) served by Sawnee EMC.     

The Foundation launched the school lunch program initiative in 2019 to assist with funding school lunches for children who may not have the means to purchase a hot lunch. These funds are made possible by Sawnee EMC members who voluntarily participate in Sawnee EMC’s Operation Round Up program.  Operation Round Up is a program, unique to electric cooperatives, that allows members to round up their electric bill to the next highest dollar. That change is then directed to the Foundation and 100% of these funds are returned to our local communities. 

“Operation Round Up is the very definition of local. Our members, who we serve locally, have an option to participate in Operation Round Up and know that the money they donate will be returned to local organizations and schools,” states Mandy Love, Director of Marketing. 

Since 2019, $145,186 has been donated, through the Sawnee Electric Foundation, to fund lunch programs deficits at schools served by Sawnee EMC throughout its service area. Through Operation Round Up, Sawnee EMC members contribute an average of $6 per year, but these small donations have allowed the Foundation to donate over $4.7 Million back into the communities since 2003.
