CUMMING, GA – Sawnee EMC is proud to announce they recently installed their 200,000th electric meter.  This is a major milestone for the not-for-profit electric cooperative, which is currently the 8th largest EMC in the nation, out of about 900 electric cooperatives.

Sawnee EMC was founded in 1938 by local residents who organized together to get electricity out into the rural, unserved area.  At the time, the existing for-profit electric companies chose not to invest in installing poles and wires in rural areas because it was not profitable.

These electric energy pioneers who helped create the cooperative, each paid a $5 membership fee.  This fee, which remains the same even after 85 years, secured loans and helped transform the rural area of north Georgia one farm at a time.  Today, Sawnee EMC has unparalleled reliability and outage response time, and also provides members with extremely competitive electric rates.

President and CEO, Michael Goodroe, states, “We were founded to serve our communities and things have certainly changed since 1938.  We are very proud of our history, but we are focused on what is ahead, and we are committed to meeting the needs of our members throughout our seven-county service area.”

Since all members have helped the utility grow, to further celebrate this major milestone, Sawnee EMC plans to enter all active residential members into a drawing for an energy credit.  One hundred (100) Sawnee members will be drawn at random and will receive a $25 energy credit on their next electric bill.

“We want all of our members to know we are thankful for them and appreciate the opportunity to meet and exceed their needs each day with safe, reliable and affordable electricity,” states Blake House, Vice President of Member Services.

Sawnee EMC is adding more than 3,500 meters per year and by the end of 2024 anticipates providing service to approximately 200,800 active meters. Sawnee EMC’s more than 375 employees stand ready to continue to provide its members with reliable electric service.
