CUMMING, GA – As winter weather is predicted to impact Georgia this weekend, Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation (Sawnee EMC) is taking measures to prepare for potential power outages.
Forecasts for accumulation of snow and ice may fluctuate in the coming days, but even small amounts of ice can cause serious damage. Just ½ inch of ice can add up to 500 pounds of weight to a power line, causing it to sag or break. The weight of snow and ice on trees causes branches or entire trees to fall onto lines. Strong winds increase these risks even further, raising the possibility for extended outages.
With that in mind, Sawnee EMC has mobilized key personnel and procured additional crew, is preparing trucks with emergency equipment and has increased supplies of materials that may be needed. Members are encouraged to prepare, as well.
For those planning to use a generator during any power interruptions that may occur, follow manufacturer’s operating instructions and all safety guidelines to prevent the backfeeding of powerlines, protecting electric utility employees from serious or fatal injuries.
Winter Storm Preparedness & Energy Conservation Tips:
- Prepare for medical needs. Such as having a plan for loved ones who depend on medical equipment that requires electricity.
- Protect your home. Secure windows and doors and move loose items inside.
- Charge Up. Plug in all devices and keep them at a full charge. Have extra batteries available.
- Check the Pantry. Make sure you have non-perishable food items, bottled water on hand and a manual can opener on hand.
- Fill Your Tank. It is always good to fill your car with gasoline in preparation. This can serve as another charging source for your devices if your home is without power.
- Check your supply of firewood. If your home has a fireplace.
Even if power outages do not occur, extremely cold weather is still in the forecast. Sawnee EMC members can take small steps to conserve energy and positively impact their electric usage and ultimately their bill.
- Set thermostats to 68 degrees or lower.
- Add extra blankets where needed.
- Open blinds, drapes and curtains to let in warmth from the sun and close them at night to keep out the cold.
- Close the fireplace damper when not in use.
